If you have any concerns, our team is here to assist you.

Sedation Instructions

The following are key instructions that patients must follow when being sedated for their dental appointment. Adhering to these guidelines ensures your safety and the effectiveness of the procedure. Please review them carefully and contact our office if you have any questions or need further clarification.

R

Medication

Sedation medication is to be taken in our office. Avoid liquids 4 hours prior to your appointment. Do not take sedation at home!

R

Transportation

An adult must drive you to and from your dental appointment and stay with you afterward. Do not operate machinery or make important decisions for 18 hours after your appointment.
R

Medication Restrictions

Do not take any medications containing Codeine (e.g., Tylenol #2, Tylenol #3, antihistamines, cough syrup, or nerve pills) 12 hours before and after your appointment.
R

Pre-Appointment Meal

Eat a non-fatty meal 1.5 hours (90 minutes) before the appointment (e.g., bagel with jam, toast with jam, or a small sandwich).
R

Clothing

Wear a shirt with loose-fitting sleeves, as your blood pressure will be monitored.
R

Post-Surgery Preparation

If scheduled for surgery, bring an ice pack to your appointment and have soft, cold foods ready at home.
R

No alcohol

Avoid alcohol for 18 hours after your appointment.

Instructions Following Endodontic Surgery

1. Swelling and Discoloration: Slight swelling and skin discoloration are normal, usually starting 48 hours after surgery. To minimize swelling, gently apply an ice pack over the surgical area—20 minutes on, 10 minutes off—for 3-4 hours, not exceeding 6 hours. Avoid lifting or pulling your lip to examine the surgical area, as this may delay healing.

Important: If you cannot apply ice due to sedation, please have someone assist you.

2. Diet: Adequate food and fluid intake is essential after surgery. Soft, cold foods like ice cream, Jello, pudding, and yogurt are recommended. Avoid crusty, hard, very warm foods and carbonated beverages. If eating is difficult, consider a diet supplement (e.g., Sego, Nutrament, Slender).

3. Oral Care: Use a soft toothbrush carefully in the areas involved in the surgical procedures. Do not floss in the area until the sutures dissolve.

4. Rinsing: Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for the first 24 hours. Afterward, gently rinse with Peridex or Listerine Zero after each meal and before bedtime. Clean around sutures, and the incision with a cotton swab dipped in Peridex or Listerine Zero.

5. Sleep: Sleep with your head slightly elevated on the first night after surgery.

6. Smoking: Do not smoke for at least 24 hours following surgery.

7. Unusual Symptoms: Report any unusual symptoms, such as excessive bleeding, swelling, or elevated temperature, immediately. Call the office, or if after hours, contact Dr. Rastegar’s cell phone at 905-980-0857.

8. Bleeding: Slight oozing or bleeding is normal for the first 24 hours. If it persists, please call us.

9. Discomfort: Mild discomfort is normal following surgery.

10. Follow-up: Please call the morning after surgery to report your progress.

11. Pain Management: Have extra-strength Tylenol at home for pain relief.

Medications

Aspirin and Related Medications: Avoid taking aspirin or any medication containing aspirin (e.g., Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin) for ten days prior to your appointment.

Codeine:Do not take any medication containing Codeine until at least 10 hours after surgery.

Tylenol:Take two extra-strength Tylenol every 4 hours as needed.

Antibiotics: Complete the entire course of antibiotics as prescribed.

Avoid alcohol for 18 hours after surgery. If you are taking birth control pills and have been prescribed antibiotics, use an alternative birth control method for at least one month.

Please contact our office if you experience any problems with the medications prescribed.
